2004 Competition Guide

Round 1 & 2
Lakeview, Ohio Season Opener
2004 U.S. Grand National Watercross Championships
Indian Lake Recreational Park
May 22 – May 23, 2004

The 2004 US Grand National Watercross Championships,  is returning to Lakeview, Ohio for it’s season opener of six grueling rounds of extreme watercross racing.  This will be the fourth year personal watercraft races have been held on Indian Lake.  The event will take place at Old Field Beach, which boasts over 1,200 feet of lakefront beach and plenty of parking, so there is plenty of room for spectators to bring their family, friends, and beach chairs to enjoy an excellent view of the racecourse.  Last year Lakeview provided some freezing temperatures as riders battled not only rider and machine but the weather as well.  With wind chill factors in the teens, I think that was the coldest weekend in the last 10 years.

The two-day event will feature a different round each day, guaranteeing twice the water burning racing action.  Each round will pit racers from all over the United States, Canada, and abroad in a head to head battle of machine and rider combinations, and with machines running at 70+ mph speeds, this event is sure to make waves.  The US Grand National Watercross Championships, have over the years more World and National Champions than any other personal watercraft racing circuit in the world, and the two round event ensures the World and National Champions will be racing on both days.    This will be the 1st of our Double Round Events.  Novice & Expert will both race on Saturday & Sunday promising to fill the beach with Riders, Crew, and Spectators.

This is a beautiful race site.  There is plenty of parking, with plenty of nice beach area for that perfect view of the racecourse. There is also plenty of nice clean restrooms.  And this year we have the entire beach for additional rider pit area.

The US Grand National Watercross Championships will also be making stops in Pontiac, Michigan; Harbor Beach, Michigan; and Muskegon, Michigan, with the overall individual and team champions being crowned in Muskegon, Michigan.  This year’s tour guarantees some of the best personal watercraft racing action and fastest machines the world has ever seen.

There will be races featuring personal watercraft of all makes, models, and degrees of modification separated into multiple skill levels ranging from Beginner to Pro.  New racers or those who are interested in racing personal watercraft are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate.  The two round format is perfect for people who want to try racing their personal watercraft, because it provides an excellent opportunity to quickly gain race experience by racing in two rounds in less than 48 hours. You can experience and learn about the races on Saturday, and race on Sunday.  If you are interested in racing your personal watercraft, please visit the Website,  watercross.com and click on the “Event Registration” link for important information on participation.

The schedule is the same for both days, with a mandatory riders meeting starting at 8:00am.  Practice for all classes is from 8:30 to 10:00am, and the closed course racing will start at 10:00am and will last until around 3:00pm.  The closed course racing will feature up to 18 racers vying to be the first to complete up to 20 laps on a road course style watercross track that is outlined by buoys and has waves coming from all directions. The track features one of the only split courses used in the United States, and the top-level ski riders will be required to negotiate an equally rare log jump.  The freestyle competition will be held from 1:00 to 2:00pm, all times are estimated.  In this event, riders perform mind blowing aerial acrobatics, and amazing displays of their control of their machine.  Some of the favorite stunts include 60 ft water fountains, submarines, and aerial barrel rolls.  This event is a sure crowd pleaser.

Indian Lake is famous for year-round  recreation; offering beaches, boating bicycle trails, hiking, hunting and other outdoor activities. The event will take place at beautiful Old Field Beach, which is a first class facility with over 1,200 feet of sandy beach.

The 5,800 acre lake offers unlimited horsepower boating, excellent inland lake sailing prospects, and features boat ramps and boat docks for rent. Water Skiing is popular in the open zone area. Weekend tournaments draw fishing boats and fishing enthusiasts from many parts of the state. Indian Lake is the only inland lake in Ohio with lighted buoys for night navigation.  The area is famous for year around recreation offering beaches, bicycle trails, hiking, camping, fishing, state park facilities, hunting, snowmobiling, ice skating and ice boating. Volunteers work diligently to keep the waters of Indian Lake beautiful. Unique resort homes, fine condominium living, lakeside residences, and other waterfront real estate line the various shores and can be seen when touring by boat . Scenic auto touring around the many islands and peninsulas reveal beautiful natural habitats. Several popular restaurants are accessible by both land and water. Opportunities abound at Indian Lake. Shopping for unique gifts made by our local talent plus other available services make Indian Lake a great place to live, spend a vacation, bring a loved one, enjoy your R.V., rent an island or a cottage, have a retreat or enjoy a honeymoon! Surrounded by the villages of Lakeview, Russells Point, Huntsville, Belle Center and Roundhead, Indian Lake is the number one place to be in Ohio.  With all this event has to offer, there is plenty of entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.  Don’t miss the chance to come out and see some of the summer’s hottest racing action while spending a day at the beach.  For further information please contact the US Grand National Watercross Championships Website at:  watercross.com

After a three-week break, the tour will, once again, make its annual stop at beautiful Pontiac Lake State Park in Waterford, Michigan, on June 26 - 27, for Round 3 & 4 of the 2004 US Grand National Watercross Championships. Riders look forward to coming to Pontiac because of the nice facilities at this beautiful State Park.  Pontiac has plenty of sandy beach area, along with ample shaded Pit Parking, and Camping.  Nice Showers, and Restrooms, make this a great place to camp, mainly because of the infamous Rider Party on Saturday Night at the Race Site.  Many Canadian’s make the trip to Pontiac year after year, which makes for some great Racing Action as well.  In 2003, there was some great racing action with 175 riders attending from West Virginia, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania, and Canada and from all over the Midwest.  Many Canadian's made the trip to Pontiac making the racing action even hotter.

The water conditions at Pontiac is rough and unpredictable year after year.  The large about of boat traffic on the lake makes the water rough and grueling especially during the 15-20 lap Moto's.  There is no flat water racing at Pontiac.

Pontiac Lake State Park is located 30 minutes northwest of Detroit and is a hot spot of watercraft owners and racers. This site is regarded by many people, as the best site on tour.  There is plenty of sandy beach area, the shaded pits are close, the beach is manicured and the park is beautiful. Nice Showers, and Restrooms, make this a great place to camp.  Many Canadian’s make the trip to Pontiac year after year, which makes for some great Racing Action as well.

This site has played host to an IJSBA National Tour stop three times and will be the 3rd & 4th events this year. The water conditions are choppy and fast and very similar to what racers will experience at the World Championships. For all you Expert Ski riders, and log jump will be set up to add some excitement to the racing and entertain the spectators.  Visit our Pictures and Video Section of the website, and see Pictures and Video from the 2003 Season.

Round 5 – Harbor Beach, Michigan
Maritime Festival

Thumb Watercross Challenge
Bud Light / Sea Doo Invitational
Budweiser Can-Am Cup

2004 U.S. Grand National
Watercross Championships
Harbor Beach, Michigan
July 16 - 18, 2004
View 2003 Competition Guide here
View 2003 Can Am Cup Race Recap here

After a three-week break, the tour heads north for the 4th Annual Thumb Watercross Shootout run in conjunction with the 4th Annual Harbor Beach Maritime Festival in Harbor Beach, Michigan. This is definitely the racer's favorite site year after year as the Harbor Beach locals put on an outstanding event and show tremendous hospitality.  The event will take place in their Harbor on Lake Huron on the Harbor of Lake Huron, and is a perfect site for a watercraft race, and guaranteed to be a lot of fun. The 1,000 foot long pier provides great viewing for the thousands of spectators that come to watch the Midwest's, and Canada’s finest watercraft racers.

At this Event some of the finest Watercraft Riders from Canada and the U.S.A. will compete in the popular Budweiser Can-Am Cup providing Spectators some of the finest Personal Watercraft Racing in the Nation.  This Maritime Festival in Harbor Beach, Michigan has become the 2nd largest spectator Event of Personal Watercraft Racing in the country, second only to the World Championships in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.  Over 5,000 spectators will be on hand to watch the Hot Racing Action that weekend making the pier standing room only.  The crowd is electrified Saturday Night during the Budweiser Can-Am Cup as thousands of spectators wildly cheer for favorite team.  The Ski Class, 800 Runabout Class, and the 1200 Runabout Class make up the 3 Main Events.  Nine of the best riders from Canada, and Nine of the best riders from the U.S.A. in each class, compete for the Overall Team Can-Am Cup.  Last year's event was highly successful with riders from each country battling it out for bragging rights, and a piece of the Can-Am Cup.  The pier was packed with cheering spectators as they were treated to some hot racing action.  Freestyle riders performed in between each of the 3 races, and treated the crowd to some highflying Freestyle action.  Last year's Can-Am Cup was won by the U.S.A., but this year’s event promises to be even more exciting as the Canadian's will be coming in full force to take back the Can-Am Cup.

In 2003, Riders started arriving on Thursday morning for the upcoming Weekend Events.  There were 152 Riders in attendance last year from; Missouri, Kentucky, North Dakota, Minnesota, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, and Canada.  In another popular Event, the 2003 Bud Light Invitational had 12 Teams with 48 participants.  Over 200 Riders Total competed in this year’s 3rd Annual Harbor Beach Maritime Festival, making it the 2nd Largest Personal Watercross Racing Event in the Nation.

The weekend festivities gets under way a growing and popular Event will be taking place on Friday night.  The 3rd Annual Bud Light / Sea Doo Invitational will be in full swing as local Personal Watercraft Enthusiasts will compete in Team Competition on the Jacque Bryant prepared racecourse.  Each Team will consist of 4 Riders that will each run 2 laps in a Timed Event.  All scored times from each individual of each team will then be calculated, and the Team that has the best overall time will be the Bud Light / Sea Doo Invitational Champions.

In a single year, the teams increased from 4 Teams in 2002 , to 12 Teams total for 2003.  Each Rider ran a lap around the racecourse for time.  All 4 Riders then combined their times for an overall Team Time.  A lot of participants found out that it is much harder to negotiate buoys around a racecourse then it looks.  Each participant was all smiles after their respective run, coupled with the fact they were on a brand new Kawasaki that was donated by Team Kawasaki.  A big thank you goes out to Kawasaki for their generosity in the donation of 3 Runabouts for the participants to use.  The Harbor Drug Team ended up the team to beat, as they were the 2003 Bud Light – Kawasaki Invitational Champions.  James Pawlowski, Albert Wolschegar, Jim Lewis, and Scott Pawlowski all had the best-combined Team Time for the Win.  It was a tight battle as you can see only 25 seconds separated 1st through 11th place as the final results were tabulated.

For 2004, Sea-Doo  and Ray Cs Extreme Motor Sport  of Lapeer will provide the machines for this shot at the big time.  So far, over 60 entries have signed up for this popular event with many more entrants expected as the big date draws near.

Round 6 – Muskegon, Michigan
USWRA Triple Crown Challenge Series Round 2
Sponsored by Koppel's Tool

2004 U.S. Grand National - Final Round
Watercross Championships
Muskegon, Michigan

This round will be the  second stop of the USWRA Triple Crown Watercross Challenge Series and the final round of the 2004 U.S. Grand National Watercross Championships will be held at beautiful Muskegon, Michigan on Lake Michigan August 7th & 8th.  Muskegon is famous for having some of the hottest beaches Michigan has to offer.  Located in West Central Michigan, Muskegon’s huge wide beaches, and gorgeous sunsets it is truly a beautiful location to for the second stop of the USWRA Triple Crown Watercross Challenge Series.  Various Vendor Tents will be on hand for you to enjoy, and if you like Beach Volleyball this is your spot.  See the Nation’s Best Watercross Riders as titles are on the line, compete on the unpredictable waters of Lake Michigan.  From calm waters to 4 to 6 foot waves, you never will know the conditions of the water.  This will make for some great racing action for riders and spectators alike.

Muskegon has been a very popular race site among the riders in years past.  With it's wide long beaches, and large sandy hills at the coast line, it's easy to see why it's so popular.  At Muskegon we will see some of hottest racing action of the year with many riders from all over the Eastern United States participating in the USWRA Triple Crown Challenge Series.  Also that same weekend titles will be up at stake for all the Region 6 Riders as this will be the Final Round of the 2004 U.S. Grand National Watercross Championships with Overall Awards being given out after the competition.

Numerous Vendor Tents are scheduled to be on hand that weekend with over 200 riders expecting to participate in this festive weekend.  There will be a Beer Tent on location at the restaurant/bar that is at the race site.  This will provide an excellent setting for the Racer Party Saturday Night at the Beer Tent.  All this activity will take place right next to the pits and beach.  The Restaurant/Bar is behind this Event and is looking forward to a great weekend of Personal Watercraft Racing.  With advertising being deployed heavily in Muskegon and it's surrounding areas, you can bet there will thousands of spectators in attendance to witness some of the very best Watercross Racing in the country.

With 20 laps on Lake Michigan with ocean-like water conditions, it doesn't get any better then that.  Lake Michigan can have some of the toughest water conditions in the United States, with it's constant chop and huge rollers.  Occasionally, you will see 4-6 foot waves to content with as well.  Buoy's are double anchored as this huge body of water can provide some interesting Personal Watercraft Racing.  The Freestyle competition will also be very entertaining as the competitors will be catching some huge air for some great aerial tricks.  This will be a crowd favorite guaranteed.

All of Region 6, Region 8, and Region 9 will be there as this will be an excellent benchmark and testing ground for the upcoming World Championships in October at Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
